Website that runs on Solar Powered Raspberry Pi

When we think of a website we think of a domain name and hosting (web space) to store and run our code uninterrupted. Domain and hosting has become a part of tech Business now. Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba etc. also have been investing in cloud and have been providing cloud resources. Lets take an example of Facebook for simplicity, It has almost 4 billion users now and Its servers must serve almost 1 billion hits per day. This takes a lot of resources (RAM, SSD / HD storage facilities etc), 24 hour redundant backups, power supply and High Speed Internet connection. So, the point is that, to run a facebook like website one must have a huge datacenter with a lot of servers . So, a lot of electricity is used up as these server must be up and running 24×365 days.

To conserve power most of the retail hosting providers like green geeks use 100% solar energy to power their data center. Google also is trying to catch-up with environmental friendly clean renewable energy to power their cloud infrastructures.

What we found on the internet today must be interesting to all the tech enthusiast. You must have heard about raspberry pi, a pocket sized computer low cost computer having a arm processor , a RAM and storage unit . It can run any OS and also has I/o ports. Raspberry pi’s have been used in different part of the world for different purposes like learning, robotics etc but did you know that solar powered raspberry pi also have been used as a VPS to power a website ?. A blog called Louwrentius uses Raspberry pi powered by solar energy to run. The blogger have installed 150 Watt solar panel in his balcony to power a raspberry pi . He have used a raspberry pi 3b+ model and set it up to be used as a web server .

He also have used an old car battery, solar panel, solar charge controller, LCD display, etc.

Parts used by the blogger

If its gloomy or cloudy day the solar and battery may run out. To stop this from happening the blogger have used HAproxy which redirects to an instance of his blog on the a cloud VPS.

To conclude, this DIY is a little efficient and simple to perform but it has downfalls too because the solar panel doesnot output to handle important devices like router and switch. But All in All thus is a good project to start with an unused raspberry pi.

Nepal Government to fund innovative startups upto 50 lakhs (final registration date 9th June 2020)

Amid corona virus pandemic Nepal Planning Commission (Rastriya Yojana Aayog) published a notice (11th May 2020) announcing funds for innovative startups. Mayan City unvieled by LIDAR technology

LASER has many applications one of them is Lidar (/ˈlaɪdɑːr/, Light Detection and Ranging) is a method for measuring distances (ranging) by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflection with a sensor. Differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make digital 3-D representations of the target. It has terrestrial, airborne, and mobile applications. LIDAR technology is usually mounted in drones and airplanes and then the on flight data is stored and processed. The light bounces/ reflects back the using different computational techniques in post processes LIDAR produces a height map of the surfaces as these laser light can go though canopy and caves and find the level of ground beneath.

LIDAR was carried out in Tabasco region of Mexico, where early Mayan civilization was known to exist. The area were scanned in two phases first large area were scanned in low spectral resolution and then if any leads were found the small area were then scanned using UAV’s with high resolution.

SpaceX Falcon 9 used Linux OS to Launch Astronauts to the International Space Station

Amid corona virus pandemic Space X launched its first manned rocket to the space. The year 2020 was not a good start, not to the US as death tolls were rising but there was sheer of joy in the US because they had launched a rocket from US soil to the International Space Station (ISS) after a decade. This made Space X the first private company to launch NASA’s astronauts. SpaceX mission is still incomplete as the main objective us to reuse the ship and bring back the astronauts safely to the earth. Astronauts will be staying and serving the ISS for 110 days and then return to earth in the same ship. From the year 2010 Space X’s falcon 9 rockets had been launched 89 time with 87 mission successes. And after 10 years Space X made a history.

Interesting thing about Falcon 9 was it uses linux system. As many mission critical and real time technologies uses Linux . As reported, there-were 35 core developers who coded the falcon 9 and the simulation software. The Falcon 9 onboard processor consists of 3 dual-core x86 processors and the flight software is completely coded on C/C++. Space X is also the first private space agency to use open-source software in the space.

3 processor cores are used because SpaceX uses an Actor-Judge system which provides redundancy. Every time a decision is made, it is compared with the results from the other cores. If there’s any disagreement, the decision is void and the process is restarted. If every processor core comes up with the same result than only the decision is sent to the PowerPC microcontrollers.

The Falcon 9 Dragon spacecraft runs on Linux with flight software written in C and C++. The touchscreen interface is processed using Chromium and JavaScript. and the astronauts have physical buttons to control the spacecraft

Large Digital ( L.E.D. ) boards in Nepal

You might have noticed large digital billboards while travelling to china , US or other developed countries or you might have saw it in some movies. Yeah duh!, you cannot keep your eyes off of it once you notice it. Times square, New York City and China’s capital cities are some of those places where such large billboards are installed but they are not the only place. large display have also been used in TV events and in the live events like concerts, award ceremony etc.

These large displays are not what you call a TV. Large LED boards are kind of different, they are small LED panels (comes in small sizes of 15 X 15 cm or 256mm X 128 mm) which are connected together and the contents are displayed using these units in parallel. Each units has its own power and video in/output ports which can be controlled using an external control chip. Now days the processor board we use for the parallel display comes with its own wireless connection through with we can connect to it and using a software in our laptop or mobile phone we can change the display contents. Previously, this part was a bit hard as we had to program it all.

WHY L.E.D digital display boards?

  • LED lights does not contain any toxic elements like flourescent.
  • Long Life, a single led can be used for up to 75,000 hours.
  • Less heat
  • we can replace a panel or a single led of that panel if it gets damaged
  • Digital signage helps to increase sales.
  • Digital LED display boards are flexible enough and can be used whereever we want. You can change the content whenever you want
  • The digital boards are very interactive and attracts audiences
  • Digital Billboards helps increase sales and uplift revenue
  • Digital board is a way to tell people how technologically friendly your company is

You may have noticed a Large Screen while steering your way through United World Trade Center, Tripureshwor chowk. Isn’t that just mesmerising?. Large screen catches your eyes fast due to the contrast. The LED

United World Trade Center Tripureshwor

This Large Screen was installed by UltraLedDisplay team which is a sister concern of Himalayan Solution the Nepal’s First Electronic and Robotic Goods importer. Ultra Led Display provides different types of LED displays from p2 to p10. The “p” here stands for pixel pitch, whoch is the distance between the center of one led display to another adjoining one. using Digital LED Display boards we can control the brightness, color etc. using a simple software.

Availability of Raspberry Pi 4 in Nepal

Till date there are no authorized sellers of RP in Nepal but can be found in different retail electronic stores sold independently. Himalayan solution is one of the electronic sellers in Nepal who imports electronic and robotic goods. Himalayan solution provides previos models of RP in discounted amount to engineering students in Nepal. Due to Covid-19 situation it may take a while to import RP4 models but stay tuned with them .

Important Features in Android 11 you need to know beforehand

Google releases updates to its Linux based Mobile OS every year in October or September. Android 10 was android’s 10 edition to its mobile based operating system, preliminary named “Android Q“.
